SHHA Thomas McTygue Scholarship

Thomas McTygue was a past president of the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association, Inc.

(SHHA) and a long-time horse owner and harness racing advocate. This scholarship is given in his memory.

 

The SHHA’s Thomas McTygue Scholarship is given to a graduating high school senior pursuing a two or four-year degree and who is a member of the SHHA, or whose parent, guardian or relative is a member in good standing of the SHHA. The SHHA member must have had a prior year and a current year SHHA membership and be licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission. The applicant must reside in one of the following counties: Albany, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren, Washington. If you reside outside of the listed counties, then the SHHA member must have 75% of racing starts at Saratoga Casino Raceway.

 

Criteria for winning the award include academic excellence, leadership qualities, dedication to community and being a good role model for classmates and family.

 

Special consideration will be given to those pursuing studies in an equine, animal, or agricultural field of study.

 

Two scholarship awards of up to $2500 each will be given. The award is intended to be used for tuition, fees, books, or required equipment. Award funds will be released upon the student providing invoices for these costs from the institution being attended. Checks will be made payable to that institution.
