George Harrison Walters, 86, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where he was a resident for seven years.
He was born in Gloversville, NY on April 17, 1936, a son of the late George L. and Martha Buyce Walters and was a 1953 graduate of Broadalbin High School. George was a lifelong area resident.
He was employed at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, in the gas turbine division where he served in a management position for nineteen years. He turned his passion for standardbred horses into a fulltime harness racing occupation in 1973 and was self-employed as an Owner/Trainer with a stable at Saratoga Raceway for over forty years. During the 1980s he established Bahia Mar Acres, a 100-acre boarding and brood mare farm on Route 29 in Broadalbin with Bahia Star being his most acclaimed horse racing in the NY State Sire Stakes. George also proudly served as Supervisor for the town of Broadalbin from 1996-97.
George was married to Joan Warren Walters for fifty-two years. Sadly, she died January 18, 2009. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Ronald Walters.
Survivors include his four children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 11, from 3 – 6 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown, NY. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 12, at 10 am at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company or to the Broadalbin Youth Commission in honor of George H. Walters, in care of the funeral home.
