SHHA March Communication

Significant Items Currently Being Worked:

  • We are continuing to work with SCRI, Legal (Sarah Burger), our lobbyist (Libby Post), our Assemblywoman (Carrie Woerner), and the NYSGC to obtain supplemental purse payments from Rivers for CY2020 and beyond, including addressing the currently proposed item in the NYS Budget (Part LL) regarding these payments.
    •  Joe Battaglia testified on behalf of the SHHA at the Budget Hearing on February   23rd.
    • We have held several meetings with various members of the Assembly, Senate, and Department of Budget personnel regarding this issue.
    • Carrie introduced a bill (#A5445) regarding timing of these payments.
    • We have established a landing site so members and their friends can easily send an email to their legislators in support of our organization.  The landing site can be accessed directly at www.stopthesweetheartdeal.org and from the SHHA website.  If you have already provided your information to send the email, THANK YOU!  If you have not, please do so soon.  This is very important as it has the potential to have a significant positive impact on the outcome of our efforts.  This item continues to be our highest priority at present.
    • We continue to publicize this issue in several forums including newspapers, the Empire Report, and on local TV.
  • The NYSGC issued new standards for backstretch housing (dorms) which will result in SCRI closure of the dorm.  All current residents have been notified.  The Board is working on a go-forward plan with SCRI and the current dorm residents.   The next action will be for SCRI to set a closure date which is expected to be determined by the beginning of April.  Once the closure date is established all current dorm residents will receive a letter from SCRI.  Mickey McGivern has the lead for this item.
  • We continuing to work on establishing a pension plan for our local horsemen.  Actions in progress include preparing the legal documents necessary to establish the plan and setting criteria for the participants.  We are expecting the criteria and additional information to be issued during April.  As soon as the details are available we will have personnel in the paddock on race days to provide further information, to answer questions, and to help personnel sign up.  John Hoagland has the lead for this item.

General Items:

  • The Main Track will be open Monday through Wednesday from 6 am until 9:30 am and Thursday through Saturday from 6 am until 1 pm.  The Jog Track will be open Sunday through Saturday from 6 am until 1 pm.  If maintenance/weather necessitates a change to the current schedule trainers will be notified by Club Text message from SCRI.  Please call Amy Gentile (518-581-5747) if you need access to Club Text.
  • The Board currently has several committees which review and address relevant items with the rest of the Board and recommend actions to address these items.  You do not need to be a Board member to be on a committee, so if you would like to help out your fellow horse people please feel free to join a committee.  We would greatly appreciate your involvement and support!
  • Complete tree trimming associated with the Jog Track improvements – Spring
  • SCRI is in the process of receiving quotes for the Main Track fence replacement project.  Finalization of the contract and start of work is expected during May.
  • We are currently expecting to have the annual Spring Series during May.  The dates currently anticipated are the 10th, 17th, and 24th.  The Race Office will issue specifics shortly.
  • SCRI has requested that all trainers who have a horse win ensure that a groom or other individual travel to the Winner’s Circle to be with the horse while the photograph is taken.  Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

If you have any questions for the Board, please do not hesitate to contact one of the twelve (12) current Board members or the Horsemen’s Representative.  We would like to work together with you to support you in any way we reasonably can.  Thank you, in advance, for your support!

Our next meeting is currently scheduled for April 15, 2021 at 12:30 in the Recreation Room adjacent to the Track Kitchen. If you wish to present an issue to the Board, please call Karen Kamal at 518-775-0975 to schedule an appointment.
