Condolences to the family and friends of William “Huffer” D’Avignon

William “Huffer” D’Avignon, 74, of State Route 32, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on Oct. 8, 2018 following a short illness. He was born in Mechanicville on Aug. 10, 1944, son of the late William and Mary Roberts D’Avignon. He graduated in 1964 from Stillwater High School and joined the U.S. Army where he served his country until he was honorably discharged.

Huffer worked for the New York State Department of Transportation in Saratoga Springs for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 1999. He was a long time member of the Stillwater Fire Department and Stillwater Rescue Squad.

He passionate about the time he spent at the training facility of the Saratoga Harness Track where he was a horse groomer and exerciser. He loved the horses and worked with them from the time he was a young man. Huffer was friends with many in the harness racing community and will be truly missed.

He is survived by his loving companion of 50 years, Ruth Figiel; sister, Mary Pat (Burton) Parry and her children Bill and Cathy Parry, all of Stillwater; Ruth’s boys, whom he helped raise over the years, Edward (Paula) and Paul (Theresa) Kipp; four grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, and will be held at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main St., Mechanicville, NY.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at All Saints on the Hudson North Church, 895 Hudson Ave., Stillwater, with burial to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 may be made in memory of William D’Avignon.
